About Us

Land Measurement is a free set of land area converters and reference pages for Bangladesh, India and Nepal. It started in 2013 with a single page of conversion formulas and now covers katha, bigha, decimal (satak), kani and gonda, gaj, biswa, acre and hectare, with the local size of each unit for the regions that use it.

Why this site exists

Land in this part of the world is described in three different languages at once: the survey record speaks in acres and decimals, the deed and the neighbours speak in katha and bigha, and a builder quotes square feet. The units also change from district to district, so the same word "bigha" can mean 14,400 square feet in Dhaka and 27,000 in Lucknow. These pages turn one unit into another in a click and show the formula, so you can check the figure yourself.

What you will find

How accurate are the converters?

The arithmetic is exact for the standard sizes: 1 katha = 720 sq ft, 1 bigha = 20 katha, 1 decimal = 435.6 sq ft, 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. Where a unit differs by region, the page says which size it uses and lets you choose another. Local practice still varies inside a state, so for a sale, a mutation or a court matter go by the mouza map and the deed, and have a licensed surveyor (amin) measure the plot.

Who runs it

The site is written and maintained by Anwar Hossain from Dhaka. I am not a surveyor or a lawyer; I collect the standard figures, build the tools and try to explain the units plainly. Corrections and requests for new converters are welcome in the comments under any page or through the contact page. My other site, ConvertBD, has free Bangla font and typing tools.

Privacy

All converters run inside your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere. The site uses Google Analytics to count visits and Google AdSense to show ads, which keep it free. See the privacy policy.
