Standard Land Measurement Method in Bangladesh

Land Measurement Method is separate in different countries. There are two types of land measurement are used in writing land related document in Bangladesh. One is Sotangso and other is Katha. However, there is a relationship between these two. And that is one-hundredth of one-acre is called "one percent" or "one sotangso" of land (the most commonly used phrase is "one decimal land"). On the other hand, the bigger unit of Katha is "Bigha" and the higher unit Bigha is Acre. 20 Katha of land equal to one Bigha land and three Bighas equal to one Acre of land. This measure is universal, and approved as a "Standard Measurement".  Traditionally the quantity of land is measured according to Guntar Sikol Zarip method in Bangladesh. Sometimes, on an official basis, hectares are used on government paper which is used internationally.

Inchi, Foot and Gaj

12 Inchi = 1 Foot, 3 Feet = 1 Gaj

If the product of length and width of any size of land is equal to 4840 Bargagaj, it is obliviously 1.00 acre (one acre). For example, the length of the land is 220 Gaj and the width is 22 Gaj, so the 120 Gaj × 22 Gaj = 4840 Bargagaj.

Satangso and Acre according to Bargagaj/Bargafoot

4840 Bargagaj = 1 Acre, 43560 Bargafoot = 1 Acre, 1613 Bargagaj = 1 Bigha, 14520 Bargafoot = 1 Bigha, 435.60 Bargafoot = 1 Satangsa, 80.16 Bargagaj = 1 Katha, 721.46 Bargafoot = 1 Katha, 5.01 Bargagaj = 1 Chotak, 45.09 Bargafoot = 1 Chotak, 20 Bargahat = 1 Chotak (18 Inches = 1 Hat) (authentic psy)

Katha, Bigha and Acre Measurement

1 Katha = 16 Chotak, 1 Katha = 165 Ojutangsha, 1 Bigha = 33 Satangso, 1 Sotanagsa = 100 Ojutangsa, 20 (twenty) Katha = 1 Bigha, 1.00 Acre = 100 Sotangsho = 3.03030303 ... Bigha.

Note: 100 Sotanagso or 1,000 Sohosrangso or ten thousand Ojutangso = 1.00 (one) Acre. Four digits after the decimal point (.) is to be read as Ojutangsho.

Millimeters and Inches

1 millimeter = 0.03937 inchi (approx), 1 centimeter = 0.03937inchi (approx), 1 meter = 39.37 inchi or 3.28 feet / 1.093 gaj (yards) (approx), 1000 meters = 1 kilometers, 1 kilometer = 11 hundred gaj (yards), 2 kilometers = (soya mile), 1760 gaj (yards) = 1 mile, 1320 gaj (yards) =  pune ek mile, 880 gaj (yards) = half mile, 440 yards = pawa miles, 1 square meter = 10.76 square feet (approx), 1 hector = 2.47 acre (approx), 1 inches = 2.54 cm (approx).

Guntar's Sikol/Chain Zarip

The French scientist Edmund Gunta discovered this method to make the land measurements correct and easy. He invented a type of chain by steel for measuring the land. Later this name was named after the Guntar sikol (chain). Land survey by Gautar chain in our country is very popular. Gauntar sikol is very useful for establishing acres, satak and milestones. The length of this chain is 20.31 meters (about) or 66 feet. Guntar chain is divided into 100 parts for land measuring. Each part of it is called link or zarip or kori.

Every single link = 7.92 inches, length is 10 chains × width 1 chain = 10 square chains = 1 acre,

Nos or phuli is placed after 10 links or 79.2 inches in Guntar sikol. Nos or phuli also is placed after 20 links or 158.4 inches. Nos or phuli also is placed after 30 links or 237.3 inches. Nos or phuli also is placed after  40 links or 316.8 inches. Nos or phuli also is placed after 50 links or 396.0 inches.

Nos or phuli also is placed after 80 Gantar or A mile stone also is placed after 1760 gaj (yards)
Land measuring in the Acre and Satak

100 links = 1 Guntar Chain = 1000 square link = 1 satak, 100,000 square link = 1 acre

The ribbons (Fita) are also used with the chain during the measurement of land in our country. Officially, the chain is used while measuring the land and the Amin Surveyor, etc. uses the ribbon during land measuring. If the amount of land is more chains is good to use and if is less then the ribbon is more convenient to use.

Different types of regional measurements

Different types of measurements are present in our country. These are Kani-Ganda, Bigha-Katha etc. These measurements areas vary according to the region. Inspite of different ways of land measuring system in different regions, the area of the land is measured in acres and satak officially. The acre and the satak is the same throughout the country.

Kani: There are two types of kani. Namely- (a) Kacha Kani (b) Sai Kani

Kacha Kani: 40th sataks equal to one Kacha Kani. It is also known as the 40th satak Kani as the kacha kani is measured with 40th sataks.

Sai Kani: This kani can be seen somewhere with 120 satak. Somewhere in the 160th satak it was also caught.

Comparison of different types of measurement with Kani Gonda

2 kani 10 gonda (according to 40th satak kani) = 1 acre, 1 kani = 17,280 sqft, 1 kani = 1936 bargagaj, 1 kani = 1619 square meter, 1 kani = 40 square link, 1 acre = 10 square chains, 1 acre = 100 satak , 1 acre = 4,047 square meters, 1 acre = 3 bigha 8 chattak, 1 acre = 60.5 katha, 1 satak = 1/2 ganda or 432.6 sqft.

Bigha-Katha measurement methods

1 bigha = (80 hands × 80 hands) 6400 square hat, 1 bigha = 20 kathas, 1 katha = 16 chatak, 1 chotak = 20 gonda, 1 bigha = 33,000 square link, 1 bigha = 14400 sqft, 1 katha = 720 sqft, 1 chotak = 45 sqft

Changes in feet and inches with links

1 link = 7.9 inches, 5 links = 3 feet 3.6 inches, 10 links = 6 feet 7.2 inches, 15 links = 9 feet 10.8 inches, 20 links = 13 feet 2.4 inches, 25 links = 16 feet 6.0 inches, 40 links = 26 feet 4.8 inches, 50 links = 33 feet, 100 links = 66 feet.
